As river cruising grows in popularity, so does the desire to go it alone. According to the ABTA Holiday Habits Report 2018, Solo travelling is most popular with those over 65, with the main reason being to take some time out and a river cruise is the perfect excuse!
Riviera Travel have since launched their ‘For Solo Travellers’ collection, aimed at this market as the demand increases.
Head of Specialist Product at Riviera Travel, Will Sarson said:
“Riviera Travel has long embraced solo travellers – for many years we’ve welcomed and catered for lone travellers on our escorted tour itineraries and featured sole occupancy cabins with no single supplements on many of our river cruises.
“As we saw increasing demand for this type of holiday, in 2017 we launched our first collection designed exclusively for solos which was a great success. We also introduced dedicated solo river cruises for the first time for 2018, which filled up at such a healthy rate that we added an extra date.
Sarson continued, “this year we’ve more than doubled the number of passengers on our solo holidays and we’re immensely proud to offer such a diverse range of destinations and itineraries. We look forward to bringing even more fantastic holiday options to the collection in years to come”.
Destinations include China, Madeira, Sicily, Morocco and the Dalmatian Coast for the first time – with escorted tours and river cruises providing the perfect getaway for lone adventurers.
Immersive itineraries for solo cruisers
Itineraries include rivers such as the Douro, where passengers can enjoy an eight-day round-trip cruise from Porto, passing the rolling Douro Valley hills and exploring the endless vineyards and medieval towns.
Another sailing is the Dalmatian Coast Yacht Cruise, where passengers set sail on an eight-day voyage visiting Split, Hvar and Mljet, dotted with plenty of historical significance and great structures as you go.
The escorted tours allow solo travellers to really immerse themselves in the destinations, ABTA’s report states that the second most valued trait of a cruise holiday is the chance to see multiple destinations and river cruises offer them in bundles!
Tours include:
Grant Tour of China with Yangtze cruise
a 16-day voyage including visiting rice terraces, a panda research base and imperial gardens.
