It’s been reported that Viking River Cruises are to start sailings on the Mississippi River in 2015, according to tourism officials in one of the potential port calls.
The chairman of Viking River Cruises, Tor Hagen, has confirmed previously that the cruise line fully intends to begin sailings on the river in the future but no set date has ever been given, and when contacted for comment on these latest reports a spokesman refused to confirm whether 2015 was accurate.
This suggested date comes from the officials in the town of Red Wing in Minnesota, who are claiming that the town will be one of the ports of call en route. The information they released stated that Viking River Cruises are building a new, larger ship that can carry 340 passengers to sail on the river.
This is exciting news, as river cruising in the USA offers a whole new avenue for exploration, taking the chance to see interesting towns and cities that are more off the beaten track. There are currently a couple of cruise lines offering Mississippi river cruises, which travel between New Orleans and Minneapolis.
Some of the amazing places you can see on a Mississippi river cruise include Memphis, Tennessee, known as the land of Elvis with his Graceland home to visit. St Louis in Missouri is a beautiful city, packed with a wealth of attractions, while St Paul is a fascinating centre for arts, as well as showcasing fine examples of historic architecture.
No further details have been mentioned on the river cruise on the Mississippi with Viking. but you can expect a cruise length of at least 10 nights to showcase many of the most interesting towns and cities on the route, if not voyages of two weeks. If this news is true, expect confirmation to come from Viking River Cruises imminently.
