As river cruises continue to grow in popularity, more itineraries are being created and more ships are being built to take passengers on them. That said, though there are surely some seasoned river cruisers among you there are also plenty of people who are yet to enter the world of river cruising. With that in mind, I thought it would be a good idea to address some of the most common questions people have when it comes to exploring the rivers of the world. Please do get in touch if you don’t find the answer to your particular question here.Watch movie online The Transporter Refueled (2015)
Are flights included to my departure port?
River cruise lines are all too aware of this and flights to and from the UK and transport too are usually included as part of the price you pay. Though of course, if you’d rather make your own way to your cruise port and have other plans before you board, it’s fine to book your own.
Am I free to explore on my own when in port?
Yes. Just like there is with ocean cruises, there is always a choice of excursions in port available with your river cruise line but you’re free to explore on your own, or indeed, just spend the day relaxing on-board your ship. The only exceptions to this tend to be on river cruises further afield such as in Russia and China, where UK visitors will need visas. If you’re visiting these countries, there’s no need worry if you stay with your cruise ship’s planned excursion, as you’ll be covered by a ship visa.
Will it cost me more to have a room with a view?
No. All river cruise ship cabins come with an ocean view and some offer you your own private veranda from which to take in the scenery. Some suites offer windows in both your bedroom and lounge area.
Is river cruising suitable for families?
Though there are a number of cabins available on some vessels with three beds which would be suitable for small families, by and large, river cruising is aimed at couples and there are no dedicated children’s facilities available.
Do river cruise ships have medical facilities on-board?
Unlike ocean cruise ships, river cruise vessels do not have a doctor on-board but are always close to land, should any medical emergencies arise. They all carry first aid-kits however and at least one member of staff will be a qualified first-aider.
I suffer from seasickness. Will it be a problem on a river cruise?
No. The waterways which river cruise vessels sail are all relatively calm and not tidal or choppy like the ocean can sometimes be.
Are river cruises suitable for travellers with disabilities?
River cruise lines certainly do not discourage guests with disabilities from travelling but there are a few things to consider before you travel. Firstly, not all river cruise ships have lifts, so it’s important to find one which does. Secondly, river cruise vessels are much smaller than ocean cruise ships, meaning there’s not as much scope for accessible accommodations on-board. Also there are fewer crew members on river cruise ships, so it’s important that you travel with someone who is able bodied if you have a physical disability and need help getting off the ship or indeed to assist during excursions, as many involve tours of your destination on foot.
What if I have a special dietary requirement?
Most lines offer a vegetarian option as standard and providing you notify the cruise line in advance, low salt, gluten-free and low-cholesterol meals can be provided for you.
Are there restrictions for pregnant passengers?
Yes. You won’t be able to travel when you are past your 28th week of pregnancy and you may need to take a doctor’s certificate before being permitted to sail. Your River Cruise Concierge will be able to answer any questions you may have.
Are there laundry facilities on-board?
Many of the leading river cruise lines do offer laundry facilities on a number of their ships, though some do not, so be sure to check before you travel and pack extra clothes accordingly if your ship does not offer laundry facilities.
Can I smoke on-board?
Just like ocean cruise ships, river cruise vessels are no-smoking vessels but you are free to smoke on the open top deck.
Can I bring alcohol aboard?
Yes, providing that you only consume it in your cabin. Good news if you’re embarking on a Bordeaux river cruise or are travelling up the Douro! That said, many river cruise lines offer drinks included as part of your fare.
Can I get online while on-board?
Yes in some cases. As new, state-of-the-art vessels continue to be built, there are more options for Wi-Fi connectivity, though it’s not widespread across older vessels. However, as you’ll always be close to land, there are plenty of options for connectivity when in port.
Are there hair and beauty salons on-board river cruise ships?
Some cruise lines do offer hairdressing services on-board their vessels, so if this is of particular importance to you, be sure to check before you travel.
Is there a dress code on-board?
No. River cruises are all about relaxation and exploring and there are no formal nights in the evening like there sometimes are on ocean cruises. That’s not to say you can’t dress for dinner if you want to and many cruise ships offer elegant dining rooms which are the perfect setting.
Can I bring my pet on-board?
No. Animals are not allowed on-board river cruise ships.
