Movie buffs could really enjoy a river cruise holiday as you could explore some of the famous cities where various great films have been set. Here are eight of my favourite films that have been set in some of the best cities you can visit on a river cruise, but add your own suggestions in the comments below.
Amelie – 2001
This French film tells the story of a young lady who decides to help out those around her and in her life in her own unique way. It’s charming and funny, and shows of some of the great highlights of Paris.
The Illusionist – 2006
This incredibly clever film tells the story of master magician Eisenheim, played by Edward Norton, returning to Vienna after travelling the world to try and win his love (played by Jessica Biel) from the Crown Prince. While it was set in Vienna, much of the filming was done in Prague.
Underworld – 2003
There were many films I could have chosen for this list when I was looking at Budapest but I opted for this werewolves vs. vampires, dark, stylish action film. I’d recommend skipping the sequels, but the original was a decent popcorn movie.
The Karate Kid – 2010
I’m well aware that the original Karate Kid is a classic, but the modern remake is another good film. Even though it’s called The Karate Kid but features Kung Fu. Still, you get to see a lot of Beijing including the Forbidden City.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol – 2011
One of the newer films on my list, this has a few destinations around the world, including an opening set in both Budapest and Moscow, two of the best locations you could see on river cruises.
Goldeneye – 1995
This was my first Bond film, and as such it’s still one of my favourites. The whole sequence in St Petersburg, beginning in the Winter Palace, then some archives before the tank chase through the city, is thrilling.
Tomb Raider – 2001
The first Hollywood film to be permitted to film at Angkor Wat, this film didn’t really do the game series justice but it does show off the location well, and it’s a fun way to kill 90 minutes.
Ocean’s Twelve – 2004
Much of this film is set around the sights of Amsterdam. It’s the sequel to the far-superior Ocean’s Eleven but if you want a relaxing time and you’d like to scout some of Amsterdam’s more interesting locations, it’s a perfectly fine ensemble film.
