There’s so much happening in the city of Amsterdam, whenever it is that you’re planning to book your river cruise. Here’s a look at some of the events that we’re most looking forward to this year.
March
HISWA Amsterdam Boat Show comes to the city from the 16th – 20th March, and provides entertainment for adults and children alike. Roam the city and admire this vast collection of small boats and equipment. After all, the city does have 165 canals!
April
The start of spring welcomes the annual Tulip Festival, where the 400,000 colourful (and some rare) tulips line the gardens of the museums and around the city, making April a perfect time to visit this stunning city in blossoming beauty.
May
Everyone’s favourite pick-me-up beverage comes to town in May. The Amsterdam Coffee Festival arrives from the 18th-20th May, with over 100 artisan roasters, gourmet food stalls and equipment sellers line the streets offering the best beans for purchase, as well as workshops for coffee lovers.
June
As the weather gets warmer, the Vondelpark Open Air Theatre begins, with a range of performances available each weekend. It is free to enter, but a voluntary donation is appreciated.
July
The first two weeks of July brings the unique ‘Julidans’ festival, the world renowned international dance festival. Taking place at various locations around the city, these amazing performances are well worth a visit during your voyage.
August
The 14th– 23rd August welcomes the World Cinema Screenings to the city, screening at two different venues: the Vondelpark Open Air Theatre, and De Balie. With films produced from around the world, this is a cultural event not to be missed if you visit during the summer.
September
As the summer draws to a close, the Dutch city comes alive with the Amsterdam Fringe Festival from the 3rd – 13th September. Taking place in over 25 locations throughout the city, the Fringe Festival features spectacular performances of live art, theatre, comedy and dance. Language barriers are not an issue, as many shows are available for Non-Dutch speakers.
October
The Pint Bokbierfestival (Beer Festival) takes place annually in Amsterdam, attracting around 12,000 visitors every year. There are over 50 types of ‘Bok’ beer available, so there is something for every taste. Receive a glass upon entry, and make your round to each brewer to sample their delights!
November
As the winter season approaches, Amsterdam transforms into a Winter Wonderland, with many seasonal festivals and decorations making their way into the city. The annual art event begins on the 26th November, giving art lovers a chance to view some of the up and coming artists’ work. If you are beginning to feel the Christmas spirit, then you do not want to miss out on the arrival of ‘Sinter Klaas’ and the beginning of the stunning lights festival.
December
As an incredibly popular destination in Europe, the Christmas Markets in Amsterdam certainly do not disappoint. With many river cruise lines offering sailings specifically to visit the European Christmas Markets, December visits to Amsterdam will surely get you into the Christmas Spirit. You are sure to find some unique presents for your loved ones.
